Buying a First Gun? Ask Yourself Why

Choosing a first gun requires taking a good hard look at
what you intend to do with that gun. Is it for home defense? Are you interested
in hunting game? Are you interested in target shooting? Knowing how you want to
use the gun is extremely important in choosing the right type, model, caliber
and size. Do you buy a cement mixer to mix cake batter? Both a cement mixer and
a tabletop mixer do similar things, but the effect the two have, is vastly
different. The same is true for guns.

In very broad strokes, here is a rundown of gun types and
their purposes. If you are buying a gun for self/home defense, a handgun is
your best bet. It is smaller, and highly maneuverable. For hunting, a
lightweight rifle or shotgun is a good way to start. Consider what caliber you
will be needing.  If you plan to be in
close quarters with your game, you could also look for a large caliber
revolver. Once you decide what you want to do with your gun, spend some time
testing the weight and recoil of various models. Control is everything, and if
the gun is too heavy, or the kickback is too great, then you will have little
chance of success. Consider the cost of ammunition. Ammunition can be purchased
in a range of quality based on the intended use. If you are target shooting you
don’t need to spend upwards of a dollar per round for home defense rounds.
Also, for example 9mm is about $12 per 50 count 45cal is $22 per 50 count so if
you are just getting started you may want to buy a firearm that allows for the
use of lower priced ammo until you are more seasoned.  Remember to secure the appropriate paperwork,
and most importantly, get proper training in the use of your new weapon.
